Q1: What is SEO & why is it so important?

A: In simple words, SEO or Search Engine Optimization denotes to any activity performed for the improvement of Search Engine rankings of websites, products, services or other content. It shows unpaid results which is also referred to as “free”, “organic”, “natural” or “earned” results.

The importance of SEO starts with the desire of the companies to gain more traffic for their websites. The ranking over search engines matters because users pay more heed to the first 5 searches on Google. Moreover, the users tend to trust Google’s refined search results because they consider these searches to be more authentic and specific.

Q2Name of a few search engines.

A: The names of some search engines are- Google, Bing, Yahoo!, Baidu, DuckDuckGo and Yandex.

Q3: What are the two types of SEO?

A: On-page optimisation and off-page optimisation

Q4: Define Page Rank

A: For every web page, Google gives a rank according to its algorithm. This is known as Page Rank.

Q5: What is a backlink?

A: Any incoming links to a website or web page is known as backlink.

Q6: What is a keyword?

A: SEO keywords are words and phrases in the web content that make it possible for people to find a site via search engines.

Q7: What is 301 redirect?

A: A method by which a user is redirected to new URL from old URL.

Q8: What is the Keyword Difficulty?

A: Keyword difficulty defines how difficult a keyword is to rank due to its popularity.

Q9: What is SEO friendly URL?

A: SEO-friendly URLs are those having proper length and file structure.

Q10: What is the Sandbox Effect?

A: The Sandbox Effect is the theory that websites with newly-registered domains or domains with frequent ownership or nameserver changes are placed in a sandbox (or holding area) in the indexes of Google until such time is deemed appropriate before a ranking can commence.

Q11: What is Bounce Rate?

A: It is the percentage of visitors to a particular website who navigate away from the site after viewing only one page.

Q13: What do you mean by Cloaking?

A: Cloaking is a deceptive way of optimizing your website for search. In this technique, a different content will be shown to the search engine crawler than what is presented to the end users.

Q14: Can you differentiate between ‘nofollow’ and ‘dofollow’ link?

A: No follow links do not pass Link juice and have no impact on Google Ranking Algorithm. Dofollow link passes link juice and has an impact on Google Ranking Algorithm.

Q15: Can you mention the difference between SEO and SEM?

A: SEM (Search Engine Marketing), it is used for the promotion of website through paid advertising by increasing their visibility in Search Engine Result Page (SERP) in the Ads section.  While SEO is optimizing the site to increase the organic ranking of a site.

Q16: What is Canonical issue? How will you resolve them?

A: The Canonical issue relates to duplicate pages. For instance, if a site has 2 pages of same content but different URLs and you can’t redirect it then you use a canonical tag. It is to be used in the head section on your site.

For fixing a canonical issue, you have to do a canonical redirect the visitors to a correct version when they try to go to the wrong URL.

Q17: What is On Page Optimization?

A: On-page optimization gives outcome to a web page or website ranking on Search Engine Results Page. This will regulate your webpage by page coding or by you.

Q18: What is a Meta Tag?

A: You can observe many Meta tags being used in HTML coding, but the important ones are the four Meta tags. They are Meta Title, Meta Keywords, Meta Description and Robot tags.

Q19: What are the limitations of title and description tags?

A: Title tag can be normally between 50-68 characters and Meta description tag can be around 140 – 150 characters.

Q2O: What is Article submission?

A: Article submission is considered a part of Off Page SEO optimization. Article submission, which involves the presentation of articles to online article directories like EzineArticles, GoArticles, ArticleTrader etc. with proper anchor text for link building, is performed for the promotion of any website.

Q21: What are Classified ads?

A: A classified ad is a form of advertising which is particularly common in newspapers, online and other periodicals which may be sold or distributed free of charge.

Classified advertisements are much cheaper than larger display advertisements used by businesses, although display advertising is more widespread.

Q22: What is Social Bookmarking?

A: Social bookmarking is a way for people to store, organize, search, and manage “bookmarks” of the web pages. Users can save these links to the web pages that they like or want to share, using a social bookmarking site to store these links.

These bookmarks are usually public and can be viewed by other members of the site where they are stored.

Q23: What are Webmaster tools?

A: Webmaster tool is a service provided by Google from where you can get backlink information, crawl errors, search queries, Indexing data, CTR etc.

Q24: Mention what do you understand by Frames in HTML?

A: A Frame in HTML is a technique that divides the content of a page onto several parts.  Search engines consider Frames as completely different pages and may have a negative impact on SEO. We should avoid the usage of Frames and use basic HTML instead.

Q26: Mention what will be your approach if your SEO method don’t work?

A: If the SEO method doesn’t work then do the  following:

  • First, see whether it is a new project then re-check the keywords
  • Then look for relevant keywords that can be helpful
  • Make changes in page text, title and description
  • If still not ranked then there may be some other serious issues like bad links, penguin/panda or other Google penalty, crawlability issues, UI issue etc.

Q27: What are accelerated mobile pages (AMP)?

A: AMP is a Google-back project to push for pages that load quickly on mobile devices.

Q28: What do you mean by the term Penguin?

A: It is basically an approach that helps users to block the websites that don’t follow strictly the laws and regulations compiled by the Google. It really doesn’t matter what sort of illegal techniques are considered.

Q29: What do you mean by Spider?

A: Many search engines use programs called spiders to index websites. The spiders are also known as crawlers or robots. They act as automatic date searching tools that visit every site to find new or updated web pages and links. This process is called web crawling. Spiders follow hyperlinks and gather textual and meta information for the search engine databases. They collect as much information as they can before relaying to the server of the search engine.

Spiders may also rate the content being indexed to help the search engine determine relevancy levels to a search. They are called spiders as they visit many sites simultaneously, i.e. their legs keep spanning a large area of the web. All search engines use spiders to revise and build their indexes.

Q30: What is cloaking?

A: Cloaking is a black hat SEO technique that enables you to create two different pages. One page is designed for the users, and the other is created for the search engine crawlers. It is used to present different information to the user than what is presented to the crawlers. Cloaking is against the guidelines of Google, as it provides users with different information than they expected. So, it should not be used to improve the SEO of your site.
