Advantages and disadvantages of AI

From SIRI to self-driving cars and from web searches to email communications these days, many things comprise of artificial intelligence that is one of the emerging technologies progressing rapidly each day. It tries to imitate human reasoning in every AI system. It enables the machines to act like a human brain, learning from everything and acting accordingly on every use. But, as everything in excess is dangerous, the same is the case with artificial intelligence. In this article, we will discuss the major advantages and disadvantages of AI that cannot be overlooked.

Advantages –

Zero Human Error

We humans are not perfect and we make mistakes from time to time. However, if computers are programmed properly, they won’t make mistakes at all. While making gadgets with AI in it, the previously gathered information helps a lot in applying the sets of algorithms and thus making better decisions. So, this reduces errors and increases accuracy.

Limits risk factor

This is one of the biggest advantages of AI where humans won’t need to take risks for several actions. For example, if there is an AI-based robot, then in the time of a natural calamity, humans can send these robots to save lives which will result in less pressure and faster recovery. This will greatly reduce the human risk factor. Moreover, we can send them to Mars, in the deepest part of oceans, or defuse a bomb.

Available anytime anywhere

Unlike humans, machines don’t need breaks while working. A human can work continuously for a maximum of 4-6 hours whereas a machine will do that work faster without wasting any time. Besides, they don’t even get bored while working on the same things time and again. For instance, chatbots answer the queries of customers and handle the issues effectively with the help of AI.

Great help for daily tasks

In our daily lives, we perform so many small repetitive tasks such as answering back to an email, verifying documents for any errors, and others. These tasks are mundane and boring for humans to do. Artificial intelligence automates these tasks and gives humans more time to be creative.

Digital Assistance

The digital assistance provided by AI-based systems is exceptional. It not only saves the need of human resources for a particular task, but it also does the job provided to it perfectly. Many websites use it as chatbots to interact with users and give them what they are looking for. Sometimes, these chatbots are so good that one can have difficulty in determining whether they are talking to a human being or a chatbot.

Faster decision making

Technologies like artificial intelligence and others make data-driven decisions much faster than humans ever can. But you might question why one should trust the machines? The answer is simple. It doesn’t have any biased views. Moreover, it is rational and highly practical in making decisions. This makes sure that the results obtained are quick and accurate.

Disadvantages –

Costly

It is quite costly creating a machine that imitates human reasoning and logic as it requires a lot of time and resources. It can be heavy on pockets as it takes a lot to build a machine that handles complexities very easily. Besides, these machines need frequent updating as well as need maintenance and repairing that require huge costs.

Kills job employment

AI is replacing most of the repetitive tasks with bots. They are faster and more efficient than any human being. Moreover, they do the work risk-free and error-free. Due to this, human interference is reducing resulting in the killing of many job opportunities that were once done by humans. People prefer bots to do jobs such as data entry, document validation, talking to customers, and others as they do it more efficiently and round-the-clock.

Lacks out-of-the-box thinking and creativity

The biggest disadvantage is that machines with AI are capable of doing only those jobs for which they are programmed. If they are asked to do something different, they will tend to crash or give irrelevant outputs. They can learn new things over time but they can never do something out-of-the-box or tasks that need creativity.

Makes people lazy

It is addictive for humans to use such advanced technologies that AI provides to them. It is making humans lazy by doing the jobs which they find it boring to do. AI is automating the majority of work. It can cause problems for future generations.

No emotions

Machines are no question, more efficient in doing a certain work than humans but when it comes to human connection, emotions, or sympathy, they are just mere software. People need team management in their organizations and the human bond is an essential attribute for that. However, machines with AI are not capable of it. Machines don’t understand your pain so at such times you will always need a human for a helping hand.

Now that we have come across all the major advantages and disadvantages of artificial intelligence, one might think, is it a boon or a bane for society? Well, it is all up to the users and their perspectives. Every new invention that humans make will have both of its pros and cons but the user has to make sure that he/she is using the positive sides of that invention to make this world a better place to live. There are many innovations yet to be made and big changes yet to occur. So, until then, we can sit back and enjoy the privileges of the current technology and leave the rest to the world.
